Josefina de Vasconcellos (1904-2005)

Josefina de Vasconcellos  produced hundreds of sculptures that can be seen in this country and around the world. Josefina studied at the London Polytechnic under Harold Brownsword, in Paris under Bourdelle, in Florence under Andreotti and at the Royal Academy Schools.

Two world wars inspired Josefina to design and make some of her most famous sculptures. The eight-foot Prince of Peace, a war memorial in Aldershot, The Last Chimera, which is in the Canongate in Edinburgh and The Hand, a war memorial at St. Bees School.

It was about this time that Josefina moved to the Lake District and set up a studio at the Old Wash House, Peggy Hill, Ambleside.  In the last fifty years she   produced many works for local organisations and her work can be seen in Ambleside Parish Church and at Rydal Hall.

Josefina died in 2005 shortly after her hundredth birthday.  To learn more visit the website www.josefina.org.uk
